Most complaints about shea butter on hair, that it is heavy, that it leaves buildup, that it makes hair feel dry over time, come from using it as a moisturiser. It is not one. Once you treat it as a sealant the behaviour makes sense.
Shea seals, it does not moisturise
Water is what moisturises hair. Shea butter is an occlusive: it forms a layer that slows how fast that water leaves. Put it on dry hair and you have sealed in dryness. Put it on damp hair and you have kept the water where it is useful.
This is the whole of it. Everything below follows from that one fact.
Where it goes in the order
The usual sequence is water, then a leave-in, then an oil or butter. Shea goes last, because anything applied after it has to get through it. If you are following the LOC method, shea is the C.
How much to use
Less than you think. Start with an amount the size of a pea for shoulder length hair, and add only if the ends still feel bare. Shea is dense, and the failure mode is always too much rather than too little.
The method
- Start with hair that is damp, not wet and not dry
- Apply your leave-in first and let it absorb
- Warm the shea between your palms until it turns clear and liquid
- Work it through the ends first, then upward, and stop well short of the scalp
- Rake through with fingers, then define in sections
Warming matters more than people expect. Shea applied as a solid sits on the surface in patches. Melted, it distributes in a thin, even film, which is the entire point.
Four common mistakes
- Applying to dry hair. Nothing to seal, so it just sits there.
- Using it on the scalp. Shea is comedogenic enough to block follicles for some people, and the scalp rarely needs it.
- Skipping clarifying washes. Occlusives build up. Wash properly every few weeks.
- Using it in humidity as a definer. It seals, it does not hold. Pair it with a styler if you want definition to last.
Low porosity hair should use it sparingly, since the cuticle is already closed. High porosity hair usually benefits most, because water leaves it fastest.
